'Star' LEDs for two LOMO microscopes - Robert Pavlis (USA) considerably improves the lighting of two LOMO microscopes by retrofitting with the powerful Luxeon 'Star' LED i.e. the Kohler lamp for the Mikmed (Biolam in UK) and lamp on the MBS-10 stereo microscope. A close-up view of the wildflower brown knapweed - Brian Johnston (Canada) continues his series illustrating the macro and microscopic viewing potential of wild flowering plants. A small photomicrographic study on the embryonic and larval development of selected cricket species - Robert Sturm (Austria) describes an example of an insect developmental study that can be readily undertaken by microscopy enthusiasts. (Includes animations which may take some time to download on slower connections.) LOMO Biolam microscopes: Notes on refurbishing the oblique condenser and condenser diaphragm - third in a series giving practical servicing advice for this popular scope; the principles are more widely applicable to some other microscopes. Written by Ian Walker (UK) A micro-Rothko gallery of crystals - Richard Howey (UK) illustrates the striking artistic images that he achieved from magnesium chloride based preparations. A pond in winter - Howard Webb (USA) shares some images of the aquatic life found in a monastery pond including the use of CombineZ for image stacking. A design for an LED lamp for his Bausch and Lomb microscope is also presented. Buying at eBay. A basic guide for the newcomer - Paul James (UK) offers some practical advice for buying items from this increasingly popular source for microscopes and accessories. A gallery of acetoacetanilide photomicrographs - Brian Johnston (Canada) presents attractive images showing this chemical under various lighting conditions. Changes in microscopic pond life - Mike Morgan (UK) describes and illustrates how the microscopic fauna changed in his garden pond during this winter. Topical tip. Building simple centring adjusters for microscope rotating stages - Ian Walker (UK) shows a simple homemade tool for centring the recessed adjusters often found on stages such as the Zeiss Standard, Universal and Photomicroscope. Micromets keep 'a fallin' on my head - Richard Haynes (USA) describes how to collect and study micrometeorites from deposits from outside the home; illustrated with examples. Six Victorian whole mount insect slides; with notes on imaging methods - David Walker (UK) shares images of well arranged examples by an unnamed mounter and illustrates the value of different imaging approaches i.e. a 35 mm slide scanner, a DSLR with macro lens and near infra-red microscopy for denser mounts.
