    In focus:

Microscopy-UK International Image Gallery: Maurice (Mol) Smith, the Microscopy-UK / Micscape site founder and administrator, has provided a new area for readers and contributors to freely share their images and video clips. It's designed to be easy to use and hoped that it will be particularly used by those who may wish to share images but don't wish to write an article; site contributors are also very welcome to use it. Please read the FAQ before using. With thanks to Mol for setting this up.

Downloadable Micscape issues are now offered free to all readers now that broadband is becoming widely available. Click here for the downloadable Micscape issue index. We still welcome and value voluntary subscriptions / donations to help support the venture (see top menu bar).

Reading (UK) Convention: This popular annual meeting for microscopy enthusiasts will take place on March 10th. Please click links for programme and registration. Details kindly supplied by Kit Brownlee.

Book notice: 'The Sphagnum Ponds of Simmelried in Germany: A Biodiversity Hot-Spot for Microscopic Organisms' by Martin Kreutz, Wilhelm Foissner. This looks a fascinating book for the microscopist and excellent value, see publisher's website for details. At Amazon (UK) for less than £10 and there's an on screen view only version for a tiny sum from publisher's website. Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology book revew (pdf format). With thanks to Steve Neeley for spotting it and for providing the links.

Book Notice: 'Plankton' by Chitchai Chantangsi and Malinee Chutmongkonkul. Chitchai is a past Micscape contributor and co-authored this book on plankton in Thailand while still a student. It's sumptiously illustrated in full colour and written in Thai but much to enjoy with the extensive illustrations, diagrams and family / species indexes in Latin. See University of Guelph book review. With many thanks to Chitchai and his brother for sending the complementary copy.

Paper: 'A possible biogenic origin for hydrogen peroxide on Mars: the Viking results reinterpreted' by J M Houtkooper and D Schulze-Makuch. A fascinating paper available free in English as a downloadable pdf from Cornell University Library Archive. With thanks to Gregor Overney who spotted it and for the link.

    Tip: Printing articles
Explorer 7.0: The new version of Microsoft's browser does a much better job than previous versions for printing web pages with text / images. Images aren't fragmented and layout is usually retained. In 'Print Preview' choose 'Only the selected frame' from drop down menu at top. Then select % reduction to suit.

We are delighted to receive contributions small or large from microscopy enthusiasts whether a novice or expert. If you have an image, tip or article, why not share it, this magazine is what you make it! Have a chat with us, to see how we can help share your interests. Submission guidelines.
