Dentalia
can be found in areas where the Miocene fossil deposits of an area have
an input into the collections of the recent fauna. This particular one
came from Malta, but Sicily and the Bay of Naples are also places where
fossil beds affect the local collection of Foraminifera. This genus has
had several alternative generic names.

Since forams were often extremely numerous (and because they are sensitive to temperature) geologists use them to identify and date sediment layers. They are particularly useful to the petrol industry in which workers make use of the knowledge of foram distribution in the earth`s layers. |
