STELLATE OBJECTS FOR THE MICROSCOPE
by Brian Darnton & Wim van Egmond

Pediastrum

Pediastrum are rather flat disk shaped green algae that live in colonies in enriched ponds, lakes and slow flowing rivers. Green algae (Chlorophyta) can be found in an enormous variety of shapes and sizes. Pediastrum has a peculiar life cycle. From each individual within the colony a new colony can grow. Because of this Pediastrum can become very numerous. Within a species Pediastrum differs very much in size.
