Heteropteran bugs have wings that are largely thickened. They are positioned flat on the back to form a horny shield. Only the tips of the forewings are still membranous. This gives these shieldbugs and their relatives their distinct appearance. Many shield bugs can emit a stinking fluid when alarmed.
