Algae From a Temporary Pond by Mike Morgan, UK |
Several temporary ponds occur on Dartmoor each year. I have been collecting from one such for a couple of years and this pond is pictured in January this year. There is a surprising amount of microscopic life available in such an environment and some of the various algal forms seen this year are shown here. I have attempted an identification of those depicted and would appreciate any errors etc. being made known to me. All comments to the author, Mike Morgan, are welcomed.
Footnote on microscope set-up: I use a Russian MBR1 microscope (which I have had for the last forty odd years), On this I have a JVC colour video camera. Images are taken into the computer and into AverTV Studio software. Here the images are saved either as MPGs if there is any interesting movement, or JPGs. The best of these I take into Adobe PhotoShop, and clean up the background which is usually all that is necessary. Lower
